Quality of Life
I believe we often focus too much on the length of our lives, on how much time remains. We look at how many years we've existed on the planet. We look at a calendar and sum up the number of days remaining. Why do we quantify our lives by these insignificant time buckets?
Why aren't we more focused on the quality of our lives? And I’m not talking about racking up your accomplishments, how much money you have in the bank, or how many toys are in the garage. I’m talking about the depth to which you're living your life, how fully you're living your days, not just merely existing. How much awe and joy do you allow into your life? How much presence are you bringing in? How often are you being?
Quality is about absorbing life. It is about creating as many memorable moments as possible, which don’t fuel some fucking money or material goal. Instead, these moments nurture the heart and soul.
The duration of our lives is uncertain. No one knows when their last breath is. As the years continue to creep up on me, I'm feeling the desire to live life more fully, rack up the memorable moments and experience more of the world around me. I want to engage all my senses more frequently through truly living and not just going through the motions. I want to play in nature’s playground more. I want to soak in the beauty that surrounds us that we often take for granted.
I want more quality of life, not quantity. Who the fuck cares how much of anything you have, really? If you can’t live more fully, creating deeper experiences, then what’s the point? You’re just existing and not living. You're going through the motions of busyness and not being. And before you know it, life will be over, and that will be the true tragedy – not that your life is ending, as this will happen to each of us, but that you didn't fully live the life you had.
